The year is 1992.
On the fourth of June, three young Gryffindors had pursued Professor Quirinus Quirrell through the trapdoor in the third-floor corridor in a desperate attempt to stop him from stealing the Philosopher’s Stone to present it to Lord Voldemort. Things did not, however, go entirely as they’d hoped, since by the end, only the famous Harry Potter remained to face the professor who, it turned out, had the Dark Lord affixed to the back of his skull. In the confrontation that followed, Quirrell cast the cruciatus curse on Harry, and as the boy writhed in agony, snatched the stone from his pocket and fled, narrowly avoiding a confrontation with Albus Dumbledore. Once safe in the dark forest, Quirrell used the stone’s powers to create a new body for his master, who then vanished into the darkness. Quirrell was intercepted by professors Snape and McGonagall before he could follow suit.
Before the month’s end, Voldemort has regathered his followers, but to the Wizarding World at large, seems to have vanished. Dumbledore has repeatedly warned the Ministry that the Dark Lord is simply biding his time, waiting to make his move when they least expect it, but Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge – unwilling as he is to believe that Voldemort may be back, it’s difficult for even him to deny it when faced with Quirrell’s testimony – is convinced that if the dark wizard is doing nothing, it’s because he’s still lacking in strength, and his only concession to Dumbledore is to send a pair of Auror’s out in the direction Quirrell claims Voldemort departed in to confirm his suspicions.
It is now September, and students are once more returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Over the summer, the Order of the Phoenix has reconvened, and having received Fudge’s reluctant permission to do whatever he needs to protect the school (even though the minister himself feels it unnecessary), Dumbledore has stationed the Order in and around Hogwarts for extra protection in case the Death Eaters should make that their target. Gilderoy Lockheart has been employed as the new DADA teacher, being the only official applicant, and although Dumbledore has done his best to convince him to share a classroom with Alastor ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody in the hopes of getting some real defence taught, neither man can tolerate the other’s presence. This is not the only occurrence of an Order member clashing with a professor, and as such, tensions are running high in the castle.
HARRY POTTER is also returning to school after a spectacular breakout from Privet Drive by Weasley boys Fred, George and Ron, and rumours abound that it is him, not the school in general, that Dumbledore has asked the Order to defend.
